Did you realize your Facebook Fan Page profile picture can be as big as this?
[Have updated this post as the new size is 540 pixels high by 180 pixels wide.
Facebook still refers to the vertical banner on your Page as your Page Profile Picture. This post is intended to encourage you to maximize your visual branding of the vertical banner on your Facebook (Fan) Page.]
Very generous of Facebook to give us all this valuable space on their site – the second most popular site on the globe! (Alexa)
A picture is worth a thousand words! And all this space is free!
How to Make the Best Use of this Free Space
1. Do this first – upload your full-size profile picture – 540 pixels high and 180 pixels wide. Grab your designer or Photoshop friend! Aviary is a free online photo editor you can use to create your vertical banner if you are using a single photograph.
2. Keep your branding consistent. On your Fan Page, Facebook allows you to promote your products or services – so go for it!
3. Include a photo of you in your profile picture – its about connecting with people.
4. Include your core offering so your visitors can see immediately how you can help them.

Tina,
Found this very helpful and it seems to be the blog post that keeps on giving! Do you know the dimensions for the thumbnail? I thought it would capture full width of 180 and then vertical 180 to square it off but it seems to cut some off the edges.
I’d also like to hear what you found with Angela’s logo that was getting cropped! I’m having a similar problem with one of my clients.
Thanks,
Jamie

hi there,
I had a quick question – I created a facebook fan page for a organization that I work for however it cuts our logo in half.. i tried multiple logo size’s and as soon as i hit the tab buttons it still cut’s my logo in half… please help
fyi- I had to drop down to 179 x 500 to get my pix on. FB Might have accepted a little longer, I didn’t try every resolution…
Great post with examples and all, the only thing I might ad is to make sure the top 180×180 is a good look for the square image that Facebook gives you for status updates. Here is our page company Facebook page as an example:

Hi Jen, Yes, you can adjust the thumbnail that appears on your wall. To do this hoover your mouse over the top right of your photo till you see change picture. Click on the little pencil and you’ll see a drop down menu. Select edit thumbnail so you can adjust your image. Let me know if you can get this to work for you.
when I create my image 180×540. When I do my posts on my wall the image cuts off. is there a way to modify the wall post photo? I can not figure out what I am doing wrong.
Thanks,
Jen

Nice Post.I am waiting for more info.
Nice Post.
I know this was posted a while ago but I actually happened to write up a blog post on this too. The maximum dimensions are now 180px wide by 540px high. That still makes for a pretty tall image that you can get pretty creative with which I happen to explain more in my post. Check it out if you want

Hey this is really nice information. I was looking for something similar like this. Thanks for this useful information.
Hi Tina,
I tried to use your technique (and Ronald Skelton’s too) but FB keeps giving me the error message: The photo was either too tall or too skinny.
(my photo size is 600×200 with 72ppi)
Hi Tina,
Many thanks for posting this useful info. I followed your instructions and completely changed my business profile page. It looks lovely and I’ve received lots of compliments.

Hi Nanu,
If you follow the way to access “Edit Thumbnail” in my reply to Lisa, then as you move your mouse over the thumbnail, your cursor will change and you will be able to move your visual to the section you want to show as your thumbnail.
Quick question!
How do you adjust the thumbnail image on the Fan page? Can I select a specific section of my full size picture to be displayed as my thumbnail?
I am not sure if I am doing this right, however when i upload an image full size, my posts image (the small icon next to each post)tries to show the full image instead of just the top. I hope this made sense. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Hi Lisa,
Can take a look for you if you send me a link to your fan page.
You can select your thumbnail (the small image next to your post). If you move your mouse over your new full size profile picture, you will see “change picture”, click on that and you’ll see the drop down menu. Go to “Edit Thumbnail”.
Hope that helps you Lisa

I was informed that it might violate Facebooks terms of use… anyone else worried about this? Someone said something about not being able to directly advertise and make it seem as though you as selling services through Facebook. Am I just being paranoid?
Twitter: ronaldskelton
says:
I’ve been doing this for a while now at: http://www.facebook.com/ronaldskelton and get a great response back from it. I use the same strategy on my fan pages.
You use to have to go about it a different way…If you tried to upload a 200×600 picture straight to the profile it would make you crop it, but if you loaded it as a photo album photo then made it the default you could use the entire 200×600.
I’m glad its easy for anybody to do now. If your not using this… Your wasting very valuable marketing space.

I didn’t know you could use so much of space I will consider that when i have finished setting up my own page, is it better to have a face group group or page?

Thanks Vickie, yes will update. Thanks a million for your comment – the great part about Social Media – ever evolving and we can connect so easily. So new post on its way!
@Visualalliance also sent me a tweet –

The time frame is “in the next few weeks”. The aspect ratio will be the same so the pictures will just be a bit smaller. 180 x 540 px is still generous and I’ll keep with my intention of encouraging more peeps to max this free space on Facebook!
Thanks for your heads up Vickie and your compliment – yes – lots of brilliant graphics to inspire! Wishing you an wonderful week.
Best, Tina
Great article. Love the graphics of what others are doing for profile pics.
However…you might want to add an addendum. Facebook is changing their picture sizes limits; it’s increasing for uploaded photos, but for profile pix, it’s getting smaller. For instance, profile pics will be 180×540. While it is 600×200 now, I’d advise people to plan for that shrinkage.
No word on when this will take place, but if one’s going to put in that effort now…
(I may have some of these numbers wrong, but here’s where I got them)
